Module Brief

Design and build 3 simple 3d environmental artefacts that could be integrated into an existing world depicted in a 3d video game or animated CGI film. Your design, 3d models and associated texture maps should follow industry workflows and standards. They should also reflect the art style and genre of the game or animation that the artefacts will be used for, as well as considering the significance and usage of the object.

One of the 3d artefacts MUST be designed with moving parts which could be animated.
You are NOT however required to submit any animation for this module.

You are required to show how you have considered the end - user in the build of your artefact i.e. you act as the modeller in a pipeline where you pass your artefact on to an animator.

Construction of the 3d model may only begin following approval of designs. These should be demonstrated no later than week 4 to tutor and peers via students’ blogs / online portfolio sites and with an informal Show & Tell.

Your research should include the development of your concepts from initial sketches through to finalised designs that demonstrate you have considered function, construction and textures, with a rationale for the selected idea.

Regular annotations on your online portfolio sites should demonstrate your decision making throughout the design and build process, including reflection on your progress.

Please note, it is essential that your objects follow a coherent visual style and belong to the same world. As such you should use the following lists to help you choose the context for your models:

Genre or Style
Steampunk
Historical - Medieval, Wild West etc.
Post-Apocalypse
Futuristic/Sci-Fi

Place or Setting
Bar/Tavern
Residential Dwelling ( e.g. ??)
Library
Laboratory

What do I submit and how?
The Blog or Online Portfolio must include:
• Finished renders of each of your textured 3d artifacts that clearly show the model from the top, front, side and perspective views.
• All research work, including your own drawings/designs as well as reference material from other
sources of influence & inspiration (art, animation, games, graphic novels etc.)
• Regular written posts reflecting on progress (approx. 1000 words).
• Final reflective summary on your project (500 words).
• One of either: a ‘turntable’ movie of the model as a Vimeo or youtube link on your blog OR 3d model viewer (sketchfab or marmoset) embedded in your site.

Items to be submitted:
1. Maya Project containing final models ONLY in scene files (*.mb) and textures.
2. Your Blog (as above).

All work is to be digitally submitted on your blog, including any paper-based drawings and designs. A link to your blog should be added to a document file and submitted via SOLE. Your Maya project file (in the correct Maya directory structure) should be uploaded to your Onedrive and shared with me j.pardo@worc.ac.uk
